Introduction:

Google has announced significant changes to its Nest products, with specific implications for Dropcam and Nest Secure. Here are the key updates:

  1. End of Support Dates: On April 8, 2024, Google will cease supporting the Dropcam and Nest Secure home security systems for a period of one year. These products have not been integrated with Google Home, suggesting that the upcoming Google Home app may soon be available, potentially within a year.

  2. Legacy Works with Nest Connections: As of September 29, Google will officially end the remaining legacy Works with Nest connections. This includes connections with third-party partners such as IFTTT and Lutron, as well as Alexa skills and certain Google Assistant integrations.

Specific Changes for Dropcam Owners:

After April 8, 2024, Dropcam owners will no longer have access to their cameras through the Nest app. However, Google is offering compensation to subscribers of Nest Aware. Those with subscriptions will receive a free indoor wired Nest Cam or a 50% discount coupon for non-subscribers. This offer is valid until May 7, 2024, allowing continued use of Dropcam until the support ends.

Transition of Nest Secure:

Nest Secure, introduced in 2017, will also reach its end on April 8, 2024. Google encourages users to upgrade to the ADT Self Setup system, which includes an ADT smart home hub, door and window sensors, a motion sensor, and one year of monitoring. This offer is available until May 7, 2024. While the transition may not be ideal for all users, the ADT system is compatible with Google Home.

Implications for Works with Nest Program:

Google previously transitioned from the Works with Nest program to Works with Google Assistant in 2019. However, on September 29, 2023, all Works with Nest connections will be impacted. Google plans to introduce a web-based script editor in 2023 to address some of the functionality gaps.

Support Duration and Ecosystem Integration: Google has fulfilled its commitment to provide support for Nest products for at least five years. The integration of Google Home and Nest ecosystems is a positive development, although some features and interfaces may still need improvement.

Conclusion:

Google's announcement outlines important changes to Nest products, including the discontinuation of support for Dropcam and Nest Secure. The transition to the upcoming Google Home app and the end of legacy Works with Nest connections mark a significant shift in Google's ecosystem. While these changes may cause inconvenience for some users, Google aims to provide compensation and upgrade options to ease the transition. The merging of Google Home and Nest ecosystems holds promise for the future, with anticipation surrounding the release of the new Google Home app.
